Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent honors show draws close, one notices an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything that year
  • Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
