Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such treatments need to be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
People who have discontinued the medication describe a intense return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
